Storybook Illustration - Plenty o' Disney

I worked with the excellent people at Disney Publishing worldwide for almost 11 years.  I remember the department manager's only 'requirement ' when he first described the work that would be involved, "Basically, we're looking for someone who can do everything."  He was only slight exaggerating.  The range of art styles that we took to the publishing program ran the gamut from traditional "Disney house style" to updated retro-look (a la many of the Pixar inspirations), to entirely new styles and techniques, employing raster and vector illustration.

These three were painted for "Disney/Pixar's 5-Minute stories":

Pirates and concepts

In the midst of the "Pirates" boom, a few years back, Disney Publishing was working on concepts and proposals for new "Pirates of the Caribbean" themed books.  I teamed with a fantastic artist, Jean-Paul Orpinas, who provided me with the pencil art as a leaping off point from which I would create the final paintings.  We based the style upon some of our favorite influences at the time, but then took the art to a new place, entirely.  Hard work, but tons of fun. Here are two different takes on a similar scene.

Vector graphics

Here are some my adventures in Vector Graphics, either as a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator, or just Illustrator.

Finding Nemo for the 2004 Grolier Yearbook

One of my favorite projects ever, done for the Alvin White Studio.  Besides getting to illustrate in the style of the illustrators whose work I grew up with,  I got to indulge another love of mine - getiing under the hood of something and tinkering around.  In this case, I got to push and pull Photoshop to allow me to not just slavishly ape someone else's style, but to make it my own. Getting into the heads of illustration giants like John Hench, Al Dempster, and Al White gave me an intensive education in color, style, composition, and "unconventional" thinking that I've been able to apply to every job since.
